ABOUT west yarmouth
To the surprise of many, the Cape is also enjoyable during the off-season. Shorn of short-stay guests, permanent residents get to reclaim the tranquility of their surroundings and the sweeping natural beauty that drives tourists to their area year after year.
There are delightful pockets within this region of Cape Cod region that offer reasonably priced homes in centrally located areas. West Yarmouth is one such spot, where bogs turn crimson during the autumn cranberry harvesting season and fun can be had for the whole family at venues like the Inflatable Water Park, the Whydah Pirate Museum, and many mini-golf courses.
West Yarmouth: An overview
Located in the Town of Yarmouth, West Yarmouth is a small village of over 6,000 permanent residents. It is bordered by South Yarmouth in the east, the Barnstable village of Hyannis in the west, and the Nantucket Sound in the south. One of the best things about West Yarmouth is its proximity to Route 6 at the northern border of the village. Access to this national highway means that the rest of the Cape is just a stone’s throw away.
The actual village of West Yarmouth occupies just 9.1 square miles and yet its coastline is one of the most glorious on the Cape. With around 25% of the village lying along the coast, it’s the ideal community for people who cannot get enough of the water.
The history of Yarmouth’s name remains shrouded in mystery. It was in 1639 that the first usage of the name “Yarmouth” was documented. Most historians believe, however, that the village was named after a seaside town of the same name in Norfolk, England.
West Yarmouth destinations
Thanks to its sweeping coastline, West Yarmouth is known as a beach destination. Four can be found in this village of less than 10 square miles – Bay View Beach, Colonial Acres Beach, Englewood Beach, and Seagull Beach. The first three beaches are perfect for people who are looking for a quiet afternoon by the water. Seagull Beach, on the other hand, is much more of a tourist destination with plenty of room for parking, as well as several food concession stands.
West Yarmouth is also home to several museums. One of the most interesting is the Whydah Pirate Museum, which houses the world’s only authenticated pirate treasure.
LIVING IN west yarmouth
There is no denying how great of a summer destination West Yarmouth is. However, there is more to this village than tourist spots.
Because of its central location and proximity to Route 6, residents of West Yarmouth enjoy the serenity of living in a suburban-rural area while having access to the rest of Cape Cod. West Yarmouth is the gateway to the mid-Cape area, with the advantage of being minutes away from Hyannis shopping, the mall, medical centers, and restaurants.
Often surprising to many new residents are the boating opportunities available in West Yarmouth. Part of Lewis Bay, but tucked away from the bustle of Hyannis waterfront, West Yarmouth offers easy access through the Hyannis channel to the islands, fishing grounds, and secret coves up and down the shoreline.
