Barnstable

Barnstable Village is the oldest of the seven villages in the Town of Barnstable, MA. Located on the northern portion of the town, it was first settled by some of the surviving families of the Mayflower. Today, there are around 2,800 residents living in Barnstable, celebrated as the home of some of the most historic houses and buildings not only on Cape Cod, but in the entire United States.

With Cape Cod Bay bordering it to the north, Barnstable Village is home to Millway Beach. The scenic and historically important Route 6A, also known as Old King’s Highway, bisects Barnstable Village, encompassing its picturesque Main Street.

The Barnstable Village Cultural District is a must visit for any history and culture buff. It is home to some of the country’s most enduring landmarks, such as the Sturgis Library, which includes the house of the Reverend John Lothrop, the founder of Barnstable. Constructed in 1644, the house is considered the oldest library building in the US.

Other significant historic buildings on the village’s Main Street include the Olde Colonial Courthouse, built in 1827, and Barnstable Comedy Club, the longest running comedy club in the country. The Olde Colonial Courthouse is home to the Tales of Cape Cod – a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and disseminating Cape Cod’s unique history through live and video presentations.

The village’s Main Street makes up a portion of Route 6A and is the scene of many community events, such as the Fourth of July parade, Halloween and Christmas festivities, and others. It also boasts charmingly quaint shops, restaurants, and historic museums, such as the Coast Guard Heritage Museum and the Old Jail.

Millway Beach lies north of Barnstable Village, in an area that’s also filled with historic landmarks, such as Barnstable Harbor and Millway Marina, with views of the Sandy Neck Lighthouse across the bay. The lighthouse can easily be accessed by boat. Millway Beach also features outstanding seafood restaurants, fishing charters, whale watching cruises, and more.
